Like stepping into a chemistry lab where compounds interact and molecules collide, there is a joyful explosion of sound—bubbling, ballooning, and whizzing by.
Spectra! represents a singular, anomalous release by elusive producer and recording artist J. Walker from Perth, Western Australia. Recorded and produced in 2016, Spectra! comprises a collection of 12 instrumental works, composed in response to an imagined brief exploring refined shades and pigments of color.
While stylistically somewhat comparable to European library music recordings from the 1980s, Walker’s compositions never venture too close to imitation. They maintain a unique sense of identity, more akin to a born-too-late contemporary interpretation of the sentimentality and lost moods that originally distinguished library music and gave it its charm. Unlike many modern artists who flirt with the past, Walker isn’t concerned with carbon-copying the sound palette and tape hiss of yesterday. Instead, antecedent emotional and harmonic elements are given new life and form through modern studio hardware, musical equipment, and compositional techniques.
