why we love this

Folk songs are condensed into dew drops that roll down a newly-unfurled stalk of wild rye. Merope stretches back into the worldview of generations before us, channeling their wisdom into enchanting choral work. “Salos” is a sonorous reflection on how our origins shape the present.

about the record

'Salos' (Islands) is the new album by Merope, a group largely centred around the singing and kanklės playing by Lithuanian Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė. The collective is a prime example of Lithuanian folk influences finding a firm place in the worldwide ocean of experimental folk music.

For 'Salos' they collaborated with the Vilnius chamber choir Jauna Muzika and conductor Vaclovas Augustina who also contributed some compositional work. Also, Merope was joined by their friends and recorded some extras in Reykjavik Iceland featuring Gyda Valtisdottir (Mùm), Kjartan Sveinsson (Sigur Rós) Shahzad Ismaily (Marc Ribot, Laurie Anderson).

By exploring Lithuanian folk songs, using ancient heritage and building new compositions around them they transform timeless folk songs into deep personal explorations.
