about the cd

“You never know what’s going to happen at a residency.” That’s Chicago electronic artist Brett Naucke reflecting on his time at Stockholm’s Elektronmusikstudion (EMS). Founded in 1964, EMS is known for its access to rare synthesizer systems like the Buchla 200 and Serge Modular.

At EMS, Naucke recorded hours of audio using these iconic systems, creating an album in the spirit of 70s academic synthesizer music. EMS Hallucinations reflects the pioneering ethos of artists like Pauline Oliveros and Morton Subotnick, while drawing from a contemporary palette, including dance music.

The album consists of two side-long compositions: the first built from Buchla 200 recordings, the second from the Buchla and Serge Modular combined. After recording, Naucke arranged stems in his home studio over seven months, creating shorter tracks that transform within the larger pieces. Edited sections reference trance, house, and floor-ready music with cascading synth lines and rich analog tones.
