why we love this
Across the tracks, there is a relaxed, unassuming suavity. A steady rhythm rolls across the release like a gentle, hypnotic tide, while synths have an inviting coolness, like the color seafoam. Material Things crafts a perfect album that emanates lush ease.
about the record
Under the production moniker of Material Things, 12th Isle co-founder Stewart Brown unveils a part debut album part compendium of musical collaborations spanning from 2015 to 2020. Some recordings began as long, one-take improvisations spliced together and revisited years later. Others were based upon chance opportunities to record with musicians operating a long way from the parameters of 12th Isle. Across eight tracks, the album demonstrates a studious and concise vision, drawing inspiration from minimalism, concrete and avant-garde jazz, and techno. It also embraces the themes of friendship, experimentation, and curiosity, while capturing a snapshot of the artist's personal life.
