From the start, fixed media electroacoustic music has faced a core challenge: how to reach the public. Before records existed, musique concrète began on the radio and quickly moved to concert halls. From its birth, two key questions arose: How can this music, with no live performers, be presented to an audience? And how can it use sound systems without losing its unique character? These questions, first asked seventy years ago, remain just as relevant today.
This book brings together many perspectives and experiences, highlighting the importance of thinking critically about how this music is shared.
It reminds us of the need to return to the listening experience itself—to pay attention to how sounds move, spread, appear, and fade—so that we can better understand and affirm that their very unfolding in space is essential to them.
