why we love this

Galactic crossfire, choral serenades, and scorched rumbles: Chimæras’ sounds and movements twist any senses of order and blitzkrieg the listener with their volatility.

about the cassette

Forces, named after the mythological creature chimaera, presents their first collection for mappa, curated in a manner akin to the chimeric concept itself. The album's sounds originate from a productive residency at Stockholm's EMS Elektronmusikstudion in 2022, resulting in diverse source material. The music reflects this chimeric nature, blending disparate and unexpected jams into a tapestry that echoes the amalgamated beings of open-source coding and elusive multinational entities.

Joonas Siren, the Finnish artist behind Forces, channels this creative fusion with an array of soundscapes, from glitchy 8-bit dream ambience to fragmented digital groans and noisy outbursts. Utilizing the '90s Wagon, a lesser-known synth rack from EMS, Siren manipulates forgotten '90s gear and sampled modular recordings, conjuring alien sounds and erratic compositions. Track titles draw inspiration from both legendary mythological chimaeras and the intricate networks of arms dealing corporations, symbolizing the hidden and multifaceted nature of such entities.

Forces' exploration extends to open-source coding in SuperCollider, likening code snippets to chimeric beings. Siren notes that innovation often arises by combining parts of old code with fresh ideas, leading to novel creations. Amidst this artistic process, there's an undercurrent of optimism in the capacity to reshape the existing world into something entirely new and improved, mirroring the chimeric spirit of the album itself.
