why we love this

This feels less like an album than a window left open. Joy, noise, intimacy, and confusion sit side by side, revealing a creative practice driven by curiosity rather than completion. A life lived at full speed.

about the record

The term cruising refers to the practice of seeking and obtaining instant, no-strings-attached sexual gratification with strangers. Akira Umeda was well acquainted with the term, though his practice of it was not confined to that context alone. Instead, it extended into all spheres of his life and work. Trained as a historian, he later became a ceramicist, photographer, visual artist, draftsman, graphic designer, DJ, musician, audio technician, writer, and researcher. He made forays into a wide range of artistic and academic fields with a single intention: to achieve a specific objective and then promptly move on.

Restless and easily bored, Akira shifted seamlessly from one activity to another. He was a little bit of everything, and sometimes nothing at all. Such figures often go unnoticed and unrecognized, something Umeda found perfectly acceptable. Yet unlike most, he could not truly be understood in terms of ephemerality or anonymity. In everything he pursued, he left behind a distinctive and lasting mark.

On this album, Akira Umeda assembles 42 recordings dated between 1988 and 2018, reflecting the incredible range of his creative output. The material ranges from songs to ambient music, and from field recordings to prank calls. The cassette tapes that make up this double LP were stored in Umeda’s home in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil.
