why we love this

An emancipatory departure from prescribed forms, “Threnody for the KhoiSan" fully fleshes out a worldview rich in heritage and tradition. Through mouth bows, reed flutes, and electro-acoustic mystique, Garth presents a manifestation of being that values age-old wisdom.

about the record

Garth Erasmus, a Cape Town-based artist and musician, presents "Threnody for the KhoiSan," his first album under his own name. His music is defined by a quest for alternative expression, utilizing self-built instruments, field recordings, and electronic devices.

The album embodies a primal spirituality, reflecting Erasmus's journey away from Western educational values toward deeper artistic exploration. Since the 1980s, he has created instruments intended as art objects that, upon discovering their sounds, have propelled him further on this path. Each instrument on the album stems from a process of discovery rooted in simplicity and minimalism, exemplified by the single-string Khoisan musical bow. Erasmus combines these traditional elements with electronic instruments, developing a unique musical language that incorporates experimental sound aesthetics, avant-garde composition, and free jazz.

His non-academic approach is driven by a desire to reconnect with the land and the indigenous knowledge of the KhoiSan, who continue to seek recognition as First Nations people.
