about the record

Norphonic is the debut full-length album by Mode Hexe, a project of Chicago-based drummer and electronic musician James Wetzel.

Wetzel’s work as a drummer has long been intertwined with Chicago’s experimental music scene, most notably through his involvement with the noise-rock group Melkbelly. Alongside this, he has maintained a parallel solo practice, creating skittering, rhythmically kinetic electronic pieces that are presented publicly for the first time.

The album is marked by a meticulous approach to sound design, juxtaposing frenetic yet intricately arranged percussive patterns and beats within an enveloping, often soft bed of sound. Drawing on footwork, acid, and noise, the music remains firmly contemporary, honoring Chicago’s experimental and dance lineages while pushing them into new territory.
