Created in collaboration with musicians Sam Britton and Will Worsely, experimental J-pop artist and composer Tujio Noriko crafted the soundtrack for the 2017 film Kuro, which she co-wrote and co-directed with Joji Koyama, while also playing the lead role.
The film follows Romi, a Japanese woman living in the suburbs of Paris with her paraplegic lover Milou. Told through personal anecdotes and myths, the story takes an ominous turn. It unfolds in two parallel layers—the narrated story and the visual story—creating an 'in-between' space where what is heard and seen often conflict. This tension is heightened by the soundtrack's sonic palette, which, along with the film's sound design, evokes its claustrophobic atmospheres and moments of haunting beauty.
