about the record

Desaceleradas is a love letter to the sounds of Rebajada from Debit, the project of Delia Beatriz, drawing on the half-speed cumbia pioneered by Sonido Dueรฑez in the early 1990s and recently featured on a pair of first-time tape reissues.

Using Dueรฑezโ€™s first two tapes as the starting point for Desaceleradas, Beatriz enters into a dialogue with time, culture, and geography as she recalls the sonic ecosystem that surrounded her decades ago, long before she emigrated to the United States.

If 2022โ€™s acclaimed The Long Count was an attempt to recover concealed pre-Columbian history in the face of colonization, Desaceleradas jumps forward, figuring out how memory and shared celebration can resist a more contemporary form of cultural erasure.
